Our History

R.Mason foods has been expanding its client base in the Leicester area for years, supplying many companies in the catering, retail and restaurant sectors. Our experience in the industry has helped many companies to feel safe in the knowledge that R.Mason foods can cater for all their needs.


In 1945 Reg Mason returned from the Second World War, and he started a retail fresh fish and poultry business, from the back of a van.



Over the years in addition to the retail sales he began to supply several restaurants and hotels.  A shop was added to the business followed by a second shop and another van.  The range of products extended to encompass fresh fruit and vegetables, frozen foods and canned goods.




In 1960 his son Grahame joined the business to pursue his interest in supplying the catering trade.  Following the infamous railway Beeching Cuts’ supplies of fresh fish became erratic and frozen fish became a more reliable and convenient product to handle.  A walk in deepfreeze was constructed at the back of one of the shops, which was used to store the expanding range of frozen foods now required.




The frozen food trade steadily increased during the 1970’s, especially with the emergence of the Chinese restaurant trade.  New premises were purchased, in order to accommodate deep freeze storage space and the business concentrated on supplying wholesale frozen foods.  The shops were sold off as the frozen food business continued to grow.




Business has grown mainly through personal recommendation and some establishments have been served by Masons for more than forty years, as second and third generations of the original owners have continued to trade with Masons.  In many cases chefs have continued with Masons as their suppliers even if they have moved.




The original range of poultry and seafood remains the core of the business, but is now supplemented by an extensive number of current food items, ranging from cheese to canned drinks.  As new products come onto the market so they are added to the range to cater for customers increasing and varied demands.





The Company Policy is simple “Never forget that our existence depends on successfully satisfying our customers”.  To this end we endeavour to supply what is required at a fair price coupled with prompt delivery and friendly service.




The Company has experienced many changes over the years both in situation and products handled, but have always kept abreast of current trends.  We look forward to the future with confidence, especially as the third generation of Masons, Grahames son George, has now joined the business. George has had many years experience working in fishmongers, butchery and working in the restaurant industry. 


Under the guidance of George, R.Mason foods has successfully entered into the Nursing home and Kindergarden sectors with great sucess.The Company looks forward optimistically to new style challenges, along with old style service.
